Proof that My Kid’s Smarter than I

I just watched Tangled with the girls, Santa having brought it for them because he was under the impression that Rapunzel was depicted as a go-get-’em female, a strong girl, a heroine to be heralded. What a stupid, infuriating movie. I don’t know why I periodically bring in these Disney princess movies to show Saoirse: The Princess and the Frog was a recent one, Tangled the newest. Actually, I do–I worry that I’m so massively enthusiastic that she’s (and, really, Quinn) not into princesses that I then worry that I’m swaying her with my pro-Thomas enthusiasm and in turn pressuring her to not become a tiara-wearing, makeup-wanting, prince-coveting household diva that she may or may not secretly want to be. I really don’t need to worry. The kid likes what she likes, and what she likes is healthy. If I keep this up, she’ll be 16, focusing on her studies, and I’ll be hanging outside her bedroom door begging her to just give the tattooed 20-year-old who keeps driving by our house flinging empty beer…

All Over the Place

Please excuse any typos you see here.  Quinn got to my laptop and managed to pry one of the letters off the keyboard, and I’m not sure yet if there’s been any other damage.  The good news is that I get to blame any editing errors on that–it’s my keyboard, honest!  It’s so screwy it spelled the word “weird” incorrectly!  Can you believe it?! I totally just spelled “weird” incorrectly when I typed that.  See? Took the girls to see some trains today at our local science and arts center.  There was a hearing going on in the city related to a certain child molestation scandal in college sports–you may have heard about it–so we were fully expecting a media-infested swarm, but alas, we avoided it.  Is it irony, that I was taking my innocent children to go see the wonder and merriment of a holiday display–the magic! the beauty!–when two blocks over there were grown-ups discussing things that other awful, awful grown-ups (allegedly, yeah, yeah) did to other young ones?  I don’t…

Mom, What’s the Smell?

We journeyed to the heart of Amish country Saturday to take the wee lassies aboard Thomas the Tank Engine, which had magically hopped from the Island of Sodor (I just accidentally typed “Sodom” there, and am thinking that a show based there would make for an entirely different type of programming) to a railroad somewhere in the farmlands of Pennsylvania. As is always the case  (every single time, and it is delightful) when we take SK and the Mighty on an adventure, our children were an absolute blast. They loved the “Peep! Peep!” sound Thomas is so fond of making, and the ice cream (of course) and the absolutely fantabulous can’t-be-beat surprise ride on a–wait for it–school bus. But the very best moment for this momma was her eldest daughter getting to ride a train. Because SK’s always (for two-thirds of her life, anyway) wanted to ride a train, and Thomas is just so cool and because the windows were open to let the breeze flow through the cars, bringing with it all the scents of cut hay and cow poop that fresh country air…
